A picturesque ruin of a Gothic castle on top of a basalt hill offers beautiful views of the Czech Central Highlands.
The Gothic castle Hazmburk rises on top of the basalt hill of the same name as a symbol of the Czech Central Highlands. Founded in the 13th century, its majestic silhouette with two towers – black and white – is visible from far around. The castle was gradually owned by important families such as the Zajíc family of Hazmburk, but it has been decaying since the 16th century.
To this day, impressive remains of walls and palaces have been preserved. The best-preserved is the White Tower, which serves as a lookout tower – after climbing 154 steps, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking circular view of the hills of the Czech Central Highlands, the Elbe region, and even the ridges of the Giant Mountains. The Black Tower is lower and inaccessible, but it gives the ruin its typical appearance.
A comfortable hiking trail from the village of Klapý, where you can park, leads to the castle. The ascent is not very demanding and can be handled even by families with children. The entrance fee is symbolic, and there is a small refreshment stand on site. The best time to visit is spring and autumn, when the surrounding nature is most colorful.
