About this place
A picturesque castle on its own islet off the coast, famous as a backdrop for Game of Thrones. It offers an authentic atmosphere and beautiful views of the Adriatic.
Kaštel Gomilica is one of seven stone jewels in the chain of fortified settlements along the Kaštela Riviera. It was built in 1545 by Benedictine nuns from Split as a refuge from Ottoman raids. It has retained its medieval character to this day – standing on an artificial islet with massive walls, a residential tower, and a narrow stone bridge connecting it to the mainland.
For Czech tourists, it is especially attractive due to the filming of the famous series Game of Thrones, where it served as the city of Braavos. Walk across the bridge, peek into the courtyard (entry is often restricted, but the exterior is freely accessible) and soak up the unique atmosphere of bygone times. In the vicinity, you will find pleasant beaches, cafes, and restaurants with sea views.
You can easily reach it by car from the resorts of Kaštela or Split – parking is available near the bridge. It is ideal to combine a visit with other castles, such as the neighboring Kambelovac, and enjoy a peaceful walk along the coast.
